The canvas is lined, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. There is rather a pronounced network of craquelure over some areas of the painting, most noticeable in the boy's face, visible in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouchings around the margins, denser areas in the background in the lower left and right hand corners measuring no more than 1 x 5 cm., and some spots in the background around the sitter's head and hair. There appears to be an older campaign of possible strengthening around the boy's eye and in his cheek. In overall good condition. Offered in a carved and painted wood frame with some losses.
