Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 13 May 2003, lot 19 (as Attributed to Jacob Foppens van Es).

Condition

The panel is uncradled and has split horizontally across the centre, with each half of the panel slightly bowed. There are associated pin prick losses along the split, as well as small surface scuffs visible in the upper half of the background. There is discoloured retouching to an old damage lower left measuring 3 x 2 cm. and two small visible retouchings in the lower right. In some parts of the dark green table cloth, particularly around the jug and the plate, and in parts of the earthenware jug, a more defined network of craquelure has developed. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals retouching along the split, a fine line to a diagonal scratch in the oysters 4 cm. long, to another patch in the oysters on the left 1 x 2 cm., and to an even smaller area in the oyster on the table. There are some other small retouchings in the bread roll and pewter plate, in the background around the plate of nuts, scattered in the dark background, in the neck of the jug, and to a small damage in the centre of the lower margin. In overall fair condition. Offered in a plain ebonised wood frame in good condition.
