The panel appears to be formed of three horizontal planks, and is cradled, flat and stable. The paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals The varnish fluoresces opaquely under ultraviolet light making it very difficult to see any form of intervention but horizontal bands of retouching along both the joins are visible running the width of the painting. There are also three fine lines of retouching along short, diagonal surface scratches lower right measuring 3 cm. long. In overall good condition. Offered in a Dutch style, stained wood frame in good condition with a minor loss.

拍品資料及來源

The figure of Juno here is lifted directly from Jan Brueghel the Elder and Hans Rottenhammer's rendition of this theme of circa 1598,1 but most other details – the burning buildings, the gallows, the hellish creatures and the condemned figures – are all the artist's own. Another version of the present composition is in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Gemäldegalerie, Dresden, also attributed to a follower of Jan Brueghel the Elder.2  1 Oil on copper, 25.5 x 35.5 cm.; Dresden, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Gemäldegalerie, inv. no. 877; see K.
