Condition

The canvas is lined, the paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish is relatively clear and even. There is a degree of wear visible throughout the painting. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals sensitively executed spot retouchings throughout the background, with a more concentrated patch 2 x 2 cm. in the upper half of the sliced apple, and some tiny spot retouchings scattered in the red apple, the pomegranate, and in the white feathers of the magpie. The other still life elements appear to be relatively untouched. The painting is ready to hang in its current state. Offered in an ebonised wood frame in very good condition.

拍品資料及來源

For a long time Georg Flegel was regarded exclusively as a painter of still lifes of food and laid tables. His flower still lifes became known only after World War II, and it is only recently that two even more idiosyncratic paintings, combining dead and living birds with fruit, vegetables, and other foods have been discovered, one of which is the present work, the other the painting sold in these Rooms, 4 July 1990, lot 15, for £335,500, now in the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig (fig. 1). 1 Inv. no. 3095; see H. Seifertová, Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig: Georg Flegel, Vögel, 1637, Leipzig 2000, p. 8, reproduced in colour fig. 1.
