Condition

The canvas has a firm relining, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is thick and discoloured. Retouching is visible to the naked eye in the right-hand side of the sitter's face, proper right eye, ear, part of her collar, and in the background lower right. The varnish fluoresces opaquely under ultraviolet light making it virtually impossible to discern any further intervention, although there do appear to be small areas of retouching scattered throughout her dress, in the glass beads of her necklace and to her hands. Offered in a carved painted and gilt wood frame with oak leaf and acorn carvings with some losses.

The sitter wears an impressive necklace formed of spherical and egg-shaped links, which are possibly made out of crystal. Those that are egg-shaped may be hollow, and would possibly have contained pomanders or aromatic substances to scent foul air and protect against infections. She also wears black jet bead bracelets, worn to emphasise the desirable whiteness of the lady's skin by contrast. Her embroidered waistcoat is depicted accurately with triangular gores around the waistline, but the large pattern repeat of red foliage in her skirt, underneath a very fine linen or silk, is possibly fictional.
