描述

  • The Madonna and Child enthroned, flanked by Saints, with the mystic marriage of Saint Catherine
  • tempera on panel, gold ground, shaped top
  • 60 x 32 cm.; 23 5/8  x 12 5/8  in.

Condition

The panel is uncradled and very slightly bowed, and there are thin strips of canvas applied to the edges of the integral frame. The paint surface is dirty and the thick varnish discoloured. There are several small paint losses, notably in the Madonna's robe, in the hem of Saint Stephen's cloak, in Saint John's right shoulder, and in the wings of the uppermost seraphims. There are visible old retouchings to an area of damage in the Madonna's robe, to a small vertical loss in her shoulder, throughout Saint Stephen's green robe, in the gold ground beneath the Madonna's feet and above her head, and in the brown habit of the saint, lower right. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals more recent, spot retouchings in the figures of the Madonna and Saint Stephen, but the older, aforementioned retouchings are hidden beneath the opaque varnish. In overall fair condition.
