The fortress of Gooty is located on a hill near the town of Gooty in Andrha Pradesh. It was once the stronghold of Murari Rao, a famous Mahratta warrior and ally of the British who joined Robert Clive at Arcot in 1751. Between 1776 and 1769 it was conquered by Hyder Ali, however in the Mysore Campaign the fort fell to the British. It was ceded by the Nizam to The East India Company in 1804.
