本洗在進入 Thomas Arthur 及 Emmeline Clarke 伉儷收藏之前，或為 Thomas Arthur Clarke 其父 Thomas Clarke (1834-1911) 之所藏，Allerton Hall，利物浦，英格蘭。Thomas Clarke 為當時著名英國水彩畫收藏大家，其部分藏品曾售於倫敦佳士得1929年1月29日。Thomas Clarke 去世以後，其夫人及子女於1926年將其故居 Allerton Hall 贈予利物浦市。

This exceptional brush washer with two rim cracks, as visible in the catalogue images, at approximately 1 and 2 o'clock, the larger measuring 4.9 cm. A third cleaned crack, barely visible to the lobe nearest the dragon's lower right claws at approximately 8 o'clock. The interior with a short firing crack to the base of the well, at 10 o'clock, measuring approximately 3cm, visible again at 11 o'clock where it measures approximately 3.8cm. A cleaned star crack to the base, barely visible, to the upper right section of the reign mark's double ring. A shallow 0.5 cm infilled rim chip to the exterior rim. The blue of a slightly darker, inkier tone than as shown in the catalogue image.

中國歷朝多尚文，而筆洗作為文房用具之一，其地位殊非一般。為君者，時不離文墨之事，日常需批答奏章，而閒時則賦詩習字，揮筆題跋，親筆作畫，由此以為樂。明宣德皇帝正如此，宣宗在位十年，勤政寬和，餘暇好雅事，情於水墨。

明代以前，宮廷所用筆洗多以汝窰或官窰器為範；御用青花洗似是明初始創。宣德皇帝對燒瓷一事尤為關切，故使江西景德鎮御器廠發展迅速。儘管中國青花瓷在此之前已經遍及亞洲，甚至遠輸東非，可謂名揚四海，然而中國士人普遍仍崇尚宋代素雅之風，視青花流俗而不以為然。直至十五世紀初，景德鎮窰廠製瓷技術屢創高峰，青花精品層出不窮，各式器形古樸莊雅，紋飾繪畫精美絕倫，遂漸為世人所推崇。宣德以降，官款青花瓷器燒製幾乎皆由宮廷管控，不可外傳。本品青花雲龍紋葵花式洗即為一例：器形古樸典雅，通體呈十瓣葵花式，洗心及外壁飾五爪雲龍紋，筆工細膩清晰，底書「大明宣德年製」六字款，非民間可得。

同類宣德器之龍紋造型各異，亦有龍鳳紋和鳳凰紋者；且尺寸不一，本品應屬大例。其它器形者，如高足盌、盌、盤以及小執壺等，其造型及紋飾皆和諧對襯，足隨身形，同作花式。台北故宮博物院收藏一件高足盌，團龍紋飾與本品相類，載於《明代宣德官窯菁華特展圖錄》，國立故宮博物院，台北，1998年，編號111。

本品青花雲龍紋葵花式洗，同款作例極為罕見，兩岸故宮博物院所藏應不曾見。香港蘇富比曾售出一件同款筆洗，尺寸較小（18.5公分），1992年10月27日，編號35；另一例售於北京瀚海拍賣1996年6月30日，編號990。景德鎮明御窰遺址出土殘器一件，錄《景德鎮出土明宣德官窰瓷器》，鴻禧美術館，臺北，1998年，編號19-1。

北京首都博物館收藏一件筆洗，紋飾與本品相同，惟無年款，斷代永樂，參考《北京文物精萃大系：陶瓷卷》，北京，2004年，圖版73及74；另見一類無款葵式洗，外壁飾相類團龍紋，而洗心及洗底均以雲龍紋為飾；見克里夫蘭美術館藏一例，錄《Catalogue of the Severance and Greta Millikin Collection》，克里夫蘭，1990年，圖版27；再有一例，先後兩次售於香港蘇富比：1989年11月14日，編號18及1997年11月5日，編號1351，並載於《香港蘇富比三十週年》，香港，2003年，圖版220。

宣德青花葵式洗中相對較多見者，為洗心飾相類雲龍紋，而外壁飾菱口開光龍紋，其中四件錄國立故宮博物院藏品名錄，見《故宮瓷器錄》，台北，1961-66年，卷二，部一，頁105f；另見一龍鳳紋洗及一雲龍紋洗，展於故宮博物院1998年展覽，出處同上，圖錄編號182及183。

北京故宮博物院藏一件較大例，惜略微有殘，飾菱口開光龍紋，見耿寶昌編，《故宮博物院藏古陶瓷資料選粹》，北京，2005年，卷一，圖版101。可參考其它較小近例，飾團龍鳳紋或團鳳紋，洗心飾龍鳳紋或雙鳳紋，見耿寶昌編，《故宮博物院藏明初青花瓷》，北京，2002年，卷二，圖版123及124（圖一及二）。該書亦載錄本品清代仿作，應為雍正年間製，圖版197；另一件飾鳳紋，應為康熙年製，圖版176。

大維德中國藝術基金會收藏一例，飾菱口開光龍紋，尺寸較本品略小（16.1公分），現藏大英博物館，錄Stacey Pierson，《Blue and White for China. Porcelain Treasures in the Percival David Collection》，倫敦，2004年，圖版20；T. Endo 舊藏一例，先後三次售於香港蘇富比，1988年11月15日，編號117、1997年4月29日，編號405以及2005年10月23日，編號339，並收錄於《香港蘇富比二十週年》，香港，1993年，圖版57及《香港蘇富比三十週年》，香港，2003年，圖版221；香港蘇富比曾上拍另一例，2007年4月8日，編號841；再見一與本品尺寸相同例，售於香港佳士得1996年4月28日，編號49。
