楊彥萍祖藉江蘇南京，1958年畢業於北京清華大學建築系，後加入北京畫院油畫部，1986年獲邀為紐約州立大學石溪分校研究員，同年起定居紐約；1999年，她又入選伊莉莎白藝術基金「千禧年全球藝術家」，並在紐約聯合國中心（United Nations Center）舉辦巡迴展覽，作品在歐、亞、美洲廣被收藏。楊彥萍善畫荷，尤擅捕捉花卉純淨而脆弱的生命力，以及稍縱即逝的自然美態，對於傳統國畫中的寫意技巧，亦有所創新，譬如上色時不用毛筆，改以揉碎的紙張浸墨再擠抹於作品之上。在《夏香》中，藝術家利用水彩的透明特性，使黃、藍、青、紫諸色重疊，並加入黑色模仿水墨，使畫面兼具傳統和現代氣息。
