This February, Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Day sale will be led by a spectacular depiction of Waterloo Bridge by Claude Monet. Belonging to the iconic series of works he completed during his visits to London at the turn of the century, this stunning pastel comes to the market after thirty years in the collection of Bernard & Josephine Chaus. Waterloo Bridge is accompanied by a superb selection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works from the leading artists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin and Théo van Rysselberghe.
Sotheby’s Impressionist & Modern Art Day sale will also bring together magnificent examples of Modern and Surrealist works. Four exquisite bronzes by Rembrandt Bugatti from a private British collection will open the sale. A stunning watercolour by Emil Nolde, executed in rich oranges and purples, is one of the highlights of the German works on offer. Marc Chagall’s Bouquet d’œillets aux amoureux en vert is exemplary of the artist’s distinctive visual idiom, executed in a vibrant blue-green palette and encompassing his iconic motifs, while Fernand Léger’s Gif-sur-Yvette marks the culmination of the artist’s exploration of form and colour. Francis Picabia’s sensational depiction of a cabaret dancer leads an array of Surrealist works, which also includes examples from Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, Dorothea Tanning and a magnificent painting by Dutch artist Carel Willink.
Sotheby’s is additionally delighted to present forty-two works from the private collection of Pablo Picasso’s granddaughter, Marina. Incorporating examples from across Picasso’s lifetime, highlights of the collection include Cubist drawings from the 1910s and a superb selection of unique ceramics, all of which foreground the artist’s fascination with the human face in all manner of mesmerising forms. These objects remained with Picasso for his entire life and were inherited by Marina in 1973. This collection of works from Marina Picasso leads an illustrious series of works from other notable collections, including from Andrea Kelpetar-Fallek and Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher, as well as a selection of Kubin works on paper from the heirs of Max and Hertha Morgenstern.
