About the Museum

Established in 1900, this museum is the largest cultural institution in a region rich with art. Here are more than 64,000 works of art created by cultures across the globe from ancient times to the present day. The majority of works in the collection lie in the areas of Italian Renaissance painting, French Impressionism, photography, American and European decorative arts, African and pre-Columbian gold, American art and postwar European and American painting and sculpture. In recent decades, Texas painting has become another strong focus, as well as the subject of special exhibitions, while emerging collection interests in modern and contemporary Latin American, Asian and Islamic art continue to strengthen the museum’s holdings diversity. Two important contemporary highlights are the Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden and James Turrell’s iconic installation The Light Inside (1999).
