This autumn, Sotheby’s Hong Kong is set to unveil more than 230 modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy in our Fine Chinese Paintings Sale. Among remarkable collections, a true focal point is the masterpiece "Verdant Mountains of Summer Spirit", painted by the master Zhang Daqian in May 1968. This artwork is characterized by its audacious use of vibrant blue and green hues and its fluidity, creating a breathtaking landscape of majestic mountains and misty vistas. Its mesmerizing layering and vivid brilliance deliver a powerful visual experience. Notably, this piece was originally part of the esteemed collection of Cornelius Vander Starr (1892-1968), a titan in worldwide insurance industry, and later bestowed upon his trusted associate K.K. Tse (1907-1998). Nestled within the lush emerald palette are pavilions, ancient temples, and meandering streams, imbuing an Eastern allure to the abstract work.
