Pinnacle of Human Expression in Sports and Art | Zao Wou-Ki’s 04.10.85

Hong Kong | 5 April

The 1988 Olympic Games in South Korea took place at a time when the world was on the cusp of tectonic changes. Zao Wou-Ki, a post-war abstraction artist, was entrusted by the Games to create a poster that would encapsulate the Olympic spirit through the form of art. His resulting poster, titled “Tree of Life,” was inspired by his original painting, 04.10.85. In this masterpiece 04.10.85, Zao Wou-ki’s brushstrokes surge across the canvas with vitality, converging, rising together as one. It epitomizes Olympic spirit and post-war abstraction, the pinnacle of human expression in sports and art.
