On the Road from Chatsworth to Sotheby’s: The Vestal Virgin

New York | 28 June - 18 September

As Sotheby’s New York prepares to unveil Treasures from Chatsworth – a rare, public exhibition of works from the fabled Devonshire Collection of Chatsworth House, we invite you to take a look at what it takes to ship nearly fifty masterpieces across the Atlantic. In this video, the Chatsworth team gets ready to move A Veiled Vestal Virgin by Raffaelle Monti, the marble bust of an Ancient Roman priestess commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire in 1846. A centerpiece of the collection’s sculpture gallery, it appeared in the 2005 film 'Pride and Prejudice', starring Kiera Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen. This stunning but especially delicate statue requires its own unique plan of transport. Free of charge and open to the public, Treasures from Chatsworth is presented by Rocco Forte Hotels and will be on view from 28 June through 18 September 2019 in Sotheby’s renovated New York galleries, located at 1334 York Avenue.
