Dazzling Klimt Stars in Sotheby’s Landmark London Auction

Sotheby’s March 1 Evening Sales of Impressionist, Modern & Surrealist Art totalled £195 million – the highest total for any auction ever staged in London. Leading the way was Gustav Klimt’s rare masterpiece 'Bauerngarten', which sold for £48 million ($59.3 million) – the third highest price for any work sold at auction in Europe and a record price for a landscape by the artist. A further highlight was Pablo Picasso’s 'Plant de tomates', which sold for £17 million ($21.1 million), along with three other works by Picasso which sold for over £10 million. Overall demand was strong with participation from a record 38 countries and record prices for works by Alfred Sisley, Oskar Kokoschka and Jean Arp.
