It’s not every day that Sotheby's hosts a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist like Jon Batiste. But the evening of 9 May, such a sublime performance was a reality. The festive evening was a celebration of The Studio Museum in Harlem and the upcoming Creating Space auction that will benefit the museum’s new building, After opening remarks by Sotheby’s Valentino Carlotti and Nina del Rio and current Studio Museum director, Thelma Golden, guests enjoyed a dinner curated by Red Rooster chef Marcus Samuelsson. A number of the 42 top contemporary artists who are donating works to Creating Space were in attendance, including Stanley Whitney, Jordan Casteel and Glenn Ligon. Another special guest was Dr. Mary Schmidt Campbell, the Studio Museum’s visionary director from 1977 to 1988. Ahead, view images from the evening. –Stephanie Sporn
