Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum hosts a special exhibition of landscape paintings by two artists nearly a century apart: Dutch Post-Impressionist Vincent van Gogh and contemporary British artist David Hockney. With captivating pastoral scenes and two iconic takes on brushwork, it is one of Tim Marlow's must-see exhibitions for the spring season.

    The special exhibition features a number of masterpieces, including Hockney's More Felled Trees on Woldgate, a work that displays the characteristic elements of Hockney's late-period landscapes. Here, a huge English pastoral scene unfurls over multiple canvases. Hockney employs a palette of vibrant colors, strong perspecitval angles, and a direct brushstroke.

    The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate is one of the largest landscapes Hockney ever produced. Painted across 32 canvases, the work's dimension realizes its subject's immense scale, placing the viewer within the realm of the wooded grove.

    The Harvest is one of the many remarkable van Gogh works owned by the Van Gogh Museum. It also bears striking similarities to some of the Hockney landscapes on display alongside this and other paintings by the Dutch artist. While van Gogh's landscapes are more detailed than Hockney's, both painters ultimately display a shared reverence for nature and help the viewer to find beauty and the sublime in everyday scenes.

    Documentary footage and photographs of the two artist's at work complete the exhibition. In this image, one can see the way in which Hockney connects multiple canvases. The use of multiple, smaller canvases made it easier for Hockney to paint en plein air, a method he likes to use during the initial stages of creating a painting. The sections are later brought together in Hockney's studio, where the works are finalized.
