In the last few weeks, the public has finally had the chance to experience Sotheby’s newly re-imagined New York galleries, and on 11 May, one of the brilliant minds behind the building’s renovation was properly celebrated. Shohei Shigematsu, architect and director of OMA New York, was the guest of honor at a private dinner and viewing of works from Sotheby’s Contemporary Art auctions. Showcasing Shigematsu’s many contributions, the dinner was held in one of Sotheby’s new double-height galleries. Also recognizing one of the season’s top lots – Mark Rothko’s Untitled, being sold to benefit SFMoMA's Acquisitions Fund, – Sotheby’s uniquely projected color onto its building’s exterior to echo the 1960 Rothko’s deep red and burgundy hues.
