A nne and Stuart Robiniowitz were married for over 70 years, shared 5 children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed successful careers as an educator and a lawyer, respectively. Anne was a graduate of Bennington College where she studied art and Stuart was a Trustee of the Neuberger Museum in Purchase, New York. It is Sotheby’s great privilege to honor their legacy by presenting the art collection they assembled over a lifetime together marked by their commitment to family and community, and their friendships with artists and art patrons.
Their dedication to collecting a single artist in depth is perhaps best emphasized by the many Jim Dine works they amassed. The breadth of paintings and prints included in these auctions illustrate the long relationship, one that included not just art but their families as well. Anne’s Robe, a 1986 painting, and many prints from the 1970s showcase their extensive devotion to Dine’s distinguished career. Through Jim, they also got to know photographer Lee Friedlander as an artist and a friend, further illustrating their practice of cultivating a connection while adding to the art that surrounded them.
Patronage of Jean Dubuffet across his evolving aesthetic likewise marks their support of an artist’s greater body of work, demonstrated by early portraiture as seen in the 1962 lithograph Nez Carotte and then the colorful chaos in the 1978 screenprints Faits Memorables II & III.
The highlights of the collection are two portfolios by Cy Twombly; Natural History, Part II: Some Trees of Italy, inspired by the beloved landscape of his adopted home, and Roman Notes, six prints framed together to form an imposing example of the artist’s celebrated chalkboard motif.
Anne and Stuart Robinowitz’s great appreciation of art spanned mediums (prints, paintings, photography), time periods (from the late 19th Century through the late 20th) and artists (from a haunting lithograph by Norwegian Modernist Edvard Munch to the Contemporary abstract etchings of American Richard Serra). Their appetite for diversity can be seen throughout the collection, forming a testament to the pleasure that can be found in lives well lived surrounded by beauty.
