Gérald Genta: Icon of Time

Geneva, Hong Kong, New York | February–June 2022
Sotheby’s is pleased to present Gérald Genta: Icon of Time sale series, celebrating the most famous watch designer of all time and the man behind some of the world’s most sought-after watches. “The Picasso of watchmaking” transformed the industry with his visionary designs that continue to set the gold standard today, producing pieces that have become the biggest bestsellers of watchmaking history.

For the first time, and on the 50th anniversary of the Royal Oak and the 10th anniversary of Gérald Genta’s passing, the Genta archive of exceptional designs is to be opened. The sale series will include one hundred original designs encompassing his most iconic timepieces, some never-before-seen private commissions and a selection of innovative, forward-thinking, and unique watch designs.

To continue Genta’s legacy of innovation, and in partnership with Evelyne Genta, the Maestro’s life and business partner, each original water colour painting will be paired with a unique NFT. Each NFT will feature an artistic digital replica of the design, a certificate of authenticity, and for select pieces, fascinating never-before-seen multimedia content.

A portion of the proceeds from the sales will also benefit the Gérald Genta Heritage Association, and their mission to encourage and reward the next generation in the watch industry, notably with the launch of the first edition of the Gerald Genta Prize for Young Talent.

“For me, watches are the antithesis of liberty. I am an artist, a painter, I hate having to adhere to the constraints of time. It irritates me.”
Gérald Genta

“Gérald was always ahead of his time - it seemed only natural to continue his legacy of pushing boundaries in watchmaking, by reviving these revolutionary sketches with today’s most innovative artform: NFTs”
Evelyne Genta, Life and Business Partner of Gérald Genta
