Sotheby’s Ireland & Northern Ireland Newsletter

April 2020

I hope that you and your family are well during this challenging time.

Although, as mentioned, we are not currently able to welcome you into the Dublin office, Eliza, Angela and I are all set up in our home offices and very much open for business. We want to assure you that we remain fully available to you and here to help, if we can. We can be reached at +353 (0)1 644 0200 or via email to arabella.bishop@sothebys.com/ eliza.mccormack@sothebys.com or dublinoffice@sothebys.com.

Sotheby’s global business continues to operate as normally as possible, with a number of very successful sales held in recent days demonstrating the resilience of the global art market. Last week’s auctions of Jewels Online and Watches Online were 97% and 86.5% sold by lot respectively. 85% of lots in Thursday’s Banksy Online prints sale achieved prices above their high-estimates, and the sale was 96% sold by lot overall.

We continue to offer a wide range of services, including auctions, Private Sale opportunities, online valuations, and lending through Sotheby’s Financial Services. Given the increasing preference of many clients to engage with us in digital formats to discover, explore and bid on art and objects, we are confident we can continue to deliver exceptional service and sales to our clients around the world.

We are available via email or on the telephone and would be delighted to provide advice and complimentary valuations, for auction, insurance or private sale, on any relevant works within your collection at this time.

With my best wishes and continuing good health,
Arabella

44 FITZWILLIAM SQUARE, Works from the Estate of the late Patrick Kelly

44 Fitzwilliam Square, Works from the Estate of the Late Patrick Kelly. Auction 10 November 2020

An avid collector, Patrick Kelly furnished his Dublin home with a stunning array of Irish pictures recognising the tradition of Irish painting from the 18th to 20th centuries and encompassing works by William Ashford, George Mullins, Paul Henry, Roderic O’Conor, Jack B. Yeats and William Scott, among others. These paintings were wonderfully complemented in the interiors of 44 Fitzwilliam Square, a Georgian townhouse which he lovingly restored, with fine Georgian and Regency furniture, silver and decorative arts, which were amassed by Kelly from auctions and dealers over the past three decades. Highlights include a pair of important George II Irish mirrors supplied to Sankey Winter, Dean of Kildare and marquetry tables attributed to William Moore of Dublin.

The collection reveals Patrick’s passion for Irish art and his discerning eye, with pictures and furniture beautifully married within the elegant surroundings of 44 Fitzwilliam Square.

Private Sales

Even in uncertain moments, like the one we find ourselves in now, there are still many collectors who wish to sell or invest in art. Sotheby’s David Schrader, head of private sales, shares the many ways he and his team can help clients every day. “Collecting doesn’t only happen four times a year at auction – it really is a year-round activity,” he says. “Our clients are interested in purchasing the best objects at the best prices whenever they are available.”
