ixty years after the death of Victor Brauner, Sotheby’s unveils a collection shaped as much by history as by instinct : the remarkable ensemble assembled by Fred Feinsilber.
Born in Romania in 1940 into a Jewish family marked by exile, Fred Feinsilber carried throughout his life a singular relationship to place and identity: never rooted, yet never displaced. A scientist turned industrialist, he began collecting not as a pursuit of status, but as a deeply personal language, one that brought together books, tribal art and 20th-century masters into a cohesive, intimate vision.
At the heart of this collection lies a profound and almost instinctive connection to Brauner. The eleven works gathered here form the core of the sale, reflecting a shared sensibility between artist and collector, one born from the same Romanian soil, and shaped by parallel histories of rupture and reinvention.
More than a collection, this ensemble reveals an eye where Surrealism becomes not just a movement, but a way of navigating the world.
