A key venue for lens-based work

When it opened in 1971, the Photographers’ Gallery was the first public space of its kind in the U.K. and has played a major role in raising the profile of photography and its practitioners since. The aim of its founding director, Sue Davies, was to champion artists working with cameras before many institutions recognised the medium as an art form. It gave first public U.K. exhibitions to artists such as Juergen Teller, Taryn Simon, Martin Parr, Zineb Sedira and Corinne Day. Today it showcases all forms of photography, including work by new and established artists and historical archives, in its specially-designed building in the heart of London’s West End.
