Norval Foundation

Opened in 2018, the Norval Foundation is dedicated to the research and exhibition of 20th- and 21st-century visual art from the African continent and its diaspora. Located in the Steenberg area of Cape Town, adjacent to Table Mountain National Park, the foundation combines the experience of art with an appreciation for nature. Its pavilion building, designed by DHK Architects, sits on the edge of an indigenous wetland and is thoughtfully designed to harmonize with its surroundings while minimizing environmental impact. The foundation serves as the custodian of several distinct collections across painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media, and works to support and position African artists within the global art historical canon. The outdoor sculpture garden is set among the native flora and serves as an enchanting environment for the display of monumental sculptures from the permanent collection, including works by Norman Catherine, Yinka Shonibare, Nandipha Mntambo and William Kentridge.
