McNay Art Museum

San Antonio, Texas | United States

About the Museum

Founded in 1954, the McNay Art Museum was the first modern art museum in Texas. Since Marion McNay first bequeathed her Spanish Colonial Revival mansion and personal art collection, the museum has expanded to contain over 20,000 works and now features a range of 20th- and 21st-century European and American paintings, sculptures and photographs. Notable highlights include the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts and the Jeanne and Irving Matthews Collection of Art Glass. The McNay expanded in 2008 with the opening of the Jane and Arthur Stieren Center for Exhibitions, designed by French architect Jean-Paul Viguier. This comprises a gallery space for exhibitions, a garden, a lecture hall and classrooms for the museum’s comprehensive education programme.
