Prized works by canonical masters of Western civilization are woven throughout this intimate collection. The monumental Neoclassical edifice itself – a sophisticated example of 1920s elegance that was renovated to renewed splendor in 1995 – has a commanding presence on a spectacular site, with unsurpassed vistas of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city and the Pacific Ocean beyond. This museum brings to mind a time when the fine arts epitomized civilisation’s highest values: Auguste Rodin’s The Thinker is here, as well as works by El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Fra Angelico and a generous trove of classical antiquities, in addition to noteworthy temporary shows.
