About the Museum

Here, in one of northern Europe's largest museums, is a collection dating from 1770 to contemporary art that features works by artists including Pipilotti Rist, James Turrell, Mona Hatoum, Tony Oursler, Gilbert & George and Annika von Hausswolf. A strong symbol of the Museum’s commitment to contemporary art is Olafur Eliasson’s Your rainbow panorama, the permanent circular skywalk that prominently surmounts the rooftop of the ten-storey structure, and sets the pace of excitement for much of what happens within. Of particular interest is the so-called “9 Spaces,” a reference to Dante Alighieri’s nine circles of hell. Devoted to installation art, this “special exhibition gallery” is envisioned as a sequence of spaces moving upward from “hell” to “heaven” via a grand spiral staircase. Since this new building opened to the public in 2004, prominent special exhibitions have been inspired, curated or made by the likes of Bill Viola, Frank Gehry, Paul McCarthy, Robert Rauschenberg, Mariko Mori, Wim Wenders and Edvard Munch.
