The essential idea is, as the name says, to inspire joy. Joy in savouring delicious, natural food. Joy in friends and communities coming together again. Joy in simplicity, refined aesthetics and in delights for all the senses.

Nestled within our Modern British and Irish art exhibition, the site-specific restaurant designed by Dixon in response to Modern British art will serve a daily menu of breakfast, lunch and supper clubs - bringing together the very best of British culture in an unique artistic and culinary experience. Visitors also get the opportunity to take home a piece of JOY as Dixon’s unique designs will be available for purchase.

The pair reunite at Sotheby’s, having launched an earlier version of JOY in Portobello, West London last summer, at the height of the UK lockdown. A low-key and minimalist pop-up, it combined Parle’s menu of locally-sourced, seasonal fare – and Dixon’s newfound lockdown aesthetics, which found a fresh audience in adversity. That benevolent blend of happy British eccentricity and attention to detail is central to JOY at Sotheby’s.

“Modern British is something both Stevie and I are happy to inhabit,” says Tom Dixon. “A movement that started with fashion and art spread into design and food culture, so here is a subject full of obvious links and subtle connections that we intend to uncover. And with Sotheby’s promoting what is rare, or unique in paintings and sculpture we find in foodstuffs and design.”

“I feel there might be forthcoming, a tying together of art and design and food,” agrees Stevie. “But I think the point of what we’re doing is the same really, we just want to create amazing experiences for people, lift people up and maybe give Sotheby’s a bit of a jolt!”

The Menu

JOY at Sotheby’s will serve an à la carte breakfast and lunch menu, as well as host five intimate supper clubs in the evenings.
