T his October Sotheby's Zurich is holding a selling exhibition dedicated to the Zürcher Konkrete. The exhibition will highlight Switzerland's and in particular Zurich's importance as one of the main centres for Constructive and Concrete Art during the twentiethth century.
Concrete Art was one of the most important artistic movements of the twentieth century. Its championing of geometrical abstraction was first formulated by Theo van Doesburg in the 1920s, and subsequently more fully developed by the Swiss artist and designer Max Bill. Alongside fellow Swiss artists such as Richard Paul Lohse, Fritz Glarner, Camille Graeser and Verena Loewensberg, these artists used pure colour and geometric form to create a pictorial language of non-objectivity.
