This is the collection of a lifelong, devoted wine-lover from the UK, whose genuine passion for wine sparked the beginning of this cellar many years ago, long before acquiring wines from top producers became as competitive or prohibitive as it is today. Consequently, this collector enjoyed privileged relationships with the top UK importers and agents for many years, receiving direct allocations of all the wines offered here. The cellar has been assembled over the preceding decades with extraordinary attention to purchasing only on release, from the appointed UK agent for each domaine, and therefore safeguarding impeccable direct-from-domaine provenance for every single lot that you find here. These days, collections such as this have become a genuine rarity, and it is truly exciting for us to be able to offer this unimpeachable cellar to finish our summer season.

On the following pages we present 523 lots of only the rarest, most iconic, and most sought-after bottles from Burgundy and Champagne, finishing with a tightly curated selection from the Rhône, Bordeaux and Germany. Representing the pinnacle of dedicated collecting, this cellar is a veritable treasure-trove of the world’s most famous and singular vineyard sites, with extraordinary provenance.

The red and white Burgundies offered here are the embodiment of the very best blue-chip producers, from incredible quantities of the most established names such as DRC, Dujac, Rousseau, Mugnier, Cathiard, and Ramonet, to an extraordinary selection of the most desirable next generation Burgundy producers, of particular note in this respect are beautiful parcels of Lamy-Caillat, Vincent Dancer, and Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey. In Champagne, we find especially impressive concentration of aged Salon, including bottle and magnum formats from many of the best 1990s vintages, alongside mature parcels of Krug and Dom Pérignon. Finally, we are treated to a selection of brilliant, mature classed growth Bordeaux, before a stunning run of 16 lots from Rhône unicorn Château Rayas, before closing with a handful of delightful Spätlese and Auslese from J. J. Prüm.

Provenance
All of the wines offered here were purchased on release directly from the UK and European agents for these respective producers, and therefore trace their provenance directly back to their original release from the domaines.

Storage, Inspection & Shipping
All of the wines in this sale were stored under ideal, professionally controlled conditions in a UK bonded warehouse. They were inspected on site in the UK by an international team of Sotheby’s Specialists, before being sent in a dedicated shipment directly to Sotheby’s chamber at Crown Wine Cellars in Hong Kong.

We have been very lucky to enjoy a number of meals with this generous collector, and what shines through above all else is the sincerity and honesty of this person’s passion for wine, for opening and sharing great bottles, and for exploration and learning, both via wines consumed and vineyards visited.

At a particularly memorable recent lunch, we were treated to some incredible bottles (many of which can be found in this auction), including an astoundingly fresh 1995 Salon Le Mesnil, a stately 2011 Corton Charlemagne from PYCM, a beautifully poised 2017 Dujac Morey-St-Denis 1er Cru (showing just how well these extraordinary wines drink in their youth), all topped off by a regal 1955 Château Latour, which, from a full case that had been acquired on release, spoke to the value of exceptional provenance and the meticulous commitment that has been applied when assembling this jewel of a cellar.
