Provenance & The Collection

There are two particularly notable points about this collection, beyond just the extraordinary, single-minded focus that has delivered such depth of France’s greatest domaines. First, the quality of the provenance. The great majority of the wines offered here were purchased on release and ex-domaine, from the direct agents for each producer. These wines are therefore offered having previously been owned by this collector alone, in original tissues and packaging, with consecutive bottle numbers in the vast majority of cases.

The second factor of note surrounds the profile of the collector themselves: at Sotheby’s, we have the pleasure of working with the entire cross-section of the world’s collecting community, across all the different categories we represent, from the newest collectors of Sneakers, Wearables and NFTs, to the most longstanding collectors of Old Masters and Contemporary Art. It has been widely publicized that, for Wine & Spirits, 40% of our new buyers in the category are now under the age of 40. However, it remains the case that most collections consigned to auction are offered from the cellars of longstanding collectors, many of whom began their wine journeys decades ago. It is therefore very exciting for us to be breaking the mould somewhat, with this sale offered from the cellar of a dynamic Millennial, who had the great foresight to begin their wine collecting journey almost as soon as it was legally viable!

“We are grateful and proud that this next generation collector has chosen to partner with Sotheby’s for the sale of their wine collection; a reflection of our market-leading reach and global success when it comes to engaging with the new generation of collectors, via slick, contemporary marketing and our award-winning online sales platform. The selection of wines offered here, in particular the notable bias towards large-formats, gives a glimpse into this collector’s personal philosophy; one underpinned by a recognition of the importance of generosity, sharing and fun – three things that are central to the enjoyment of wine. We are delighted to be able to give our bidders the chance to now enjoy and share in these great bottles, and the joy and fun that they are certain to bring.”

Burgundy’s Luminaries

A perfect storm of factors, the trifecta of extraordinary quality, limited supply and a broadening collector base worldwide, has resulted in what now seems to be almost insatiable worldwide demand for pristine bottles from the Côte d’Or’s most hallowed sites. Fifty percent of the entire collection offered here is comprised of Burgundy, all with stunning provenance, and searching amongst these gems you will truly find something for everyone.

From bottles right up to Methuselahs, many of the region’s greatest names are found here across such an exciting array of formats. Amongst the most lauded producers, and the next generation of emerging stars, including name checks for wines from the famous “Drops Of God” Manga series, we are treated to a roll call of Burgundy’s superstars: d’Auvenay, DRC, Comte Liger-Belair, Claude Dugat, de Vogüé, Mugnier, Roumier, Groffier, Grivot and many more! When great Burgundy is on song, there is nothing quite like it for its exquisite purity and paradoxical power. These are truly the world’s most harmonious wines.

Champagne Superstars

Perfectly stored mature Champagne is one of the wine world’s great hedonistic experiences; all too often these wines are popped and consumed early in their life, but give them the chance to age, as the examples on offer here have been, and they assume otherworldly levels of complexity and character. With the range of vintages, formats and houses on offer, it is clear that this collector has a passion for sharing and celebrating with only the very best Champagnes, from the Grand Marques to the most esoteric growers. Whether your taste is for mature large-formats of Krug and Cristal, beautiful 1970s and 1980s Comtes de Champagne, aged Egly-Ouriet and Selosse, or showstopping Jeroboams of Armand de Brignac, there are myriad bottles of interest here. The selection on offer from these esteemed producers starts in 1971 and runs right through to the present day.
