S otheby’s Brussels, Collectors Gallery, and Fabienne Wesel invite you to embark on an unforgettable journey through over 50 years of Claude Wesel's career (1942-2014), goldsmith artist and pioneer of contemporary jewellery. This exhibition highlights his innovative art, a reflection of his creative genius and avant-garde approach, and celebrates the exceptional output of this craftsman.
Claude Wesel is not only a talented goldsmith, but also a sculptor, painter, and jeweller. His craftsmanship knows no bounds. From lost wax casting to sculpture, from enamelling to stone setting, from precious wood to coloured acrylic, he explores and invents biomechanical languages where technique and the organic meet in dialogue.
With his expertise, he reinvented jewellery, combining gold and precious stones with contemporary materials that had never before been used in the art of jewellery: steel, titanium, bone, horn, rubber, and plexiglass, both transparent and coloured.
This bold fusion of materials, coupled with a technical and mechanical vision while remaining rooted in biological principles, has made him one of the most unique and innovative creators in the field, thus redefining the boundaries of jewellery design.
The jewel is one of the first messages that man receives from the world around him, an artwork to be preferably displayed on the human body. It reflects the echoes of an era, a society, a culture.
