Lillian Bassman: Elegance in Light
June–July 2026 • The Salon, New York

S otheby’s is pleased to present Lillian Bassman: Elegance in Light, a curated salon exhibition this summer at Sotheby’s Breuer. Known for her nuanced approach to fashion photography, Bassman captured female sophistication through a refined interplay of sensuality and mystery. A protégé of art director Alexey Brodovitch, Bassman began her career at Harper’s Bazaar, where she helped elevate the magazine to align with the modern post-war woman. Within her role as Co-Art Director of Junior Bazaar, she began experimenting with innovative darkroom techniques to challenge the technical conventions of the medium. Working with designers like John Galliano and Thierry Mugler, Bassman bridged the aloofness frequently present in fashion photography of the time by intimately connecting with her models and even trying on the clothing herself. Later, in the 1970s, after departing from the fashion world, Bassman rediscovered her old negatives and reprinted them in an evolved, elemental style, spurring a second wave to her photography career.

“Bassman always had a talent for sensuous abstraction, for making inwardness visible. She used light and shadow to create a dramatic atmosphere for her subjects, and she may be the only photographer who can make a hat seem less like a fashion prop than an extension of a woman’s emotional state. Bassman’s photographs are not, of course, portraits of hats, but rather of the various female lives that were lived beneath them.”
— Deborah Solomon, art critic and writer

Lillian Bassman: Elegance in Light traces the photographer’s distinctive voice across nearly five decades, from early fashion imagery to her later reinterpretations. With a novel female gaze, Bassman emulates the sensation of the outfit through the unique poses of her models, which is further articulated with her signature use of light and atmosphere. Her later reinterpretations evolve from descriptive clarity to ethereal visions of femininity.

Bassman’s photographs are currently the subject of the exhibition Lillian Bassman: Bazaar and Beyond at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, through July 26. In dialogue with her legacy, Sotheby’s Salon presents an exceptional selection of handbags, jewelry, and watches, inviting collectors to explore the spirit of fashion, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance that defined Bassman’s work—objects that, like her photographs, capture a sense of mood, refinement, and enduring allure.

Sotheby’s Salon is a new expression of collecting, bringing the expertise of Sotheby’s into a space where remarkable objects can be discovered and acquired in the moment.
