S otheby’s is pleased to offer an exciting collection of more than 200 contemporary prints from the renowned Walker Art Center, including works by acclaimed artists Nancy Graves, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Frank Stella, and Andy Warhol, among numerous others. The sale of these exceptional works, which are duplicate and triplicate editions from the Walker’s expansive holdings, will support the ongoing development and diversification of the institution’s collection.

Over the past 80 years, the Walker Art Center has developed an ambitious multidisciplinary program that embraces artistic experimentation and celebrates innovative thinkers, makers, and performers on the cutting edge of creative practice. With its distinct array of exhibitions, performances, community events, and collaborative artist projects, the Walker is an essential part of the cultural fabric of the Twin Cities and a leading voice in international contemporary art dialogues. Its collection includes more than 15,000 works across artistic disciplines, with significant examples by established and emerging voices and by artists from the region and across the country and the globe.

The Walker has also come to be recognized as an important repository of contemporary prints, with approximately half of its collection comprising works on paper. This includes artists working in traditional printmaking techniques and those who push the boundaries of the discipline. The Walker’s print collection, which is particularly strong in works made from the 1960s to the present, has grown through strong relationships with artists and reflects a commitment to collecting a depth of work through time. This includes considerable holdings of works on paper by Jasper Johns and Robert Motherwell as well as those produced with Tyler Graphics Ltd., a workshop founded by master printer Kenneth Tyler in 1976, and known for its collaborations with artists Helen Frankenthaler, Ellsworth Kelly, Joan Mitchell, and Frank Stella, among many others.

The group of prints offered by Sotheby’s New York captures the thoughtful, artist-driven collecting vision of the Walker and supports the ongoing evolution of the institution’s significant holdings. https://walkerart.org/
