T aking place on 14 October 2022, Sotheby’s Contemporary Evening Auction will coincide with the world-renowned Frieze and Frieze Masters art fairs. Aligned with these landmark events in London's artworld calendar, our October sales are our most dynamic of the year. To celebrate this, Sotheby's Evening Auction will offer a stellar presentation of works from the very top tier of post-war and Contemporary art practitioners.
Francis Bacon’s extraordinary Three Studies for Portrait of Henrietta Moraes, arguably the finest of the artist’s small-format triptychs, will debut at auction as the star lot of Sotheby’s autumn season, having been on loan to The Museum of Modern Art, New York for over thirty years. The work is the first in a sequence of offerings from the collection of broadcasting pioneer and former MoMA Chairman William S. Paley. Three Studies for Portrait of Henrietta Moraes will sit alongside Gerhard Richter’s masterful 192 Farben from 1966, the artist’s first abstract painting and first work of the seminal Colour Chart series. The auction also includes a debut selection of works from A Life in Art: The Mallin Collection, an astute and focussed collection boasting historic works of sculpture, painting and photography acquired by Sherry and Joel Mallin over many years, as well as a host of stand-out highlights including those by Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Frank Auerbach, Jean Dubuffet, and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
