Wangechi Mutu’s work deals with the very idea of human representation; how we perceive and reproduce images of what we think we are, how we view others and create images of what we think of them. In her ongoing conversations with figuration, what Mutu’s work looks at are value systems in art and beyond, that either obscure or elevate our image and reflections.

BravinLee programs works intimately with artists to translate their visual vocabulary and palette into rich textiles. Made of wool and silk, the rugs are hand-knotted by highly skilled artisans in Nepal. All carpets are made with the traditional cross-weaving technique, a Tibetan method which produces highly durable rugs.

"Darío Escobar's desire to bring together Guatemala's past and present first came to the fore in the early 2000s with a series of works exploring his country's baroque past and the enthusiasm for sports that predominates among its population today."—Alma Ruiz&nbsp;Using skateboards and various other sports equipment, Darío has effectively and often humorously deconstructed the forms, uses and meanings of the objects with which he works. While he has successfully applied this approach to a myriad of common objects such as bicycle tires, camping gear, McDonald’s cups, shopping carts and chrome bumpers, the perspective applied via his use of sports equipment is particularly relevant. Darío’s edition with The Lapis Press is inspired by his work,&nbsp;Sin título, expanding on Darío’s investigation into the global sports industry and the phenomenon of skateboarding as a lifestyle. In&nbsp;Sin título,&nbsp;Darío literally deconstructs a skateboard and reconstructs it with a series of hinges. By removing its use value and recontextualizing it as art (effectively appropriating Marcel Duchamp’s approach to his readymades), Darío presents in stark relief the culture of skateboarding beyond the sport.

Oaxaca Jar with Aubergine, New York [Still Life No. 2]

Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994).This work is offered in a glazed wood frame. Sam Francis is known for his colorful paintings and prints exploding with splashes, drips and organic forms. Lithography was the first print technique that Francis embraced in his prolific artistic career. In 1970, he opened the Litho Shop in Santa Monica, California. The Litho Shop was a monumental endeavor, one that showed Francis's commitment to printmaking that few painters had at that time.&nbsp;As a student of Zen Buddhism, Francis continuously presented his audiences with opposites like the Yin and Yang, or the black and white. Francis believed that proofing first in black would reveal the graphic impact of the image, therefore all of his color lithographs evolved from a black-inked proof. In 1973, Francis began to create black versions of his color prints, a process that would bring his prints full circle. In these prints, the blacks appear warm and cool through the mixing of various colors like green, brown and purple, adding depth and separation. Francis's lithographs transcend the media in such a way as to fool the viewer. While they might seem spontaneous and immediate, they are actually the product of a labor-intensive process that Francis makes seem effortless.
