A fine and very rare doucai 'camellia' jar, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period, Chenghua mark | 清乾隆　鬪彩山茶湖石紋罐　《大明成化年製》仿款

The design on the current jar is inspired by the Chenghua prototype, and is very close in shape and decoration. See a jar, with a Chenghua reign mark and of the period, from the Sir Percival David collection, now in the British Museum, London, illustrated in Regina Krahl and Jessica Harrison-Hall, Chinese Ceramics. Highlights from the Sir Percival David Collection, London, 2009, pl. 38, and two covered examples in the Palace Museum, Taipei, gu ci 11337 and 11338.

Numerous copies of this pattern were made in the 18th century, and extant examples from the late Kangxi to Qianlong periods are known. The present jar is likely one of the later copies in the series, distinguished by its aubergine camellia flowers, as opposed to the red and yellow flowers more commonly seen on earlier Qing examples. 此類紋飾於十八世紀被大量仿製，現存實物可見康熙晚期至乾隆時期的諸多例證。本品應屬該系列中年代較晚者，其顯著特徵在於以茄紫色繪製山茶花，有別於清代早期常見的紅、黃二色組合。可比實例包括：一件斷代為康熙朝的帶蓋罐，藏於北京故宮博物院，著錄於《故宮博物院藏文物珍品大系：五彩·鬥彩》，香港，1999年，圖版211；同書圖版232刊載的一件雍正朝作品；以及一件康熙風格例，曾售於香港蘇富比2020年7月10日，編號3128。
