This England National Team jersey was worn in the 1st half by David Beckham on June 2, 2002, when England faced Sweden in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup in Japan. Drawn into the tournament’s formidable “Group of Death” alongside Argentina and Nigeria, England entered the match knowing that a strong result would be crucial to their hopes of advancing.

Captained by David Beckham, England started brightly and controlled much of the first half. In the 24th minute, Beckham delivered a trademark corner kick that found Sol Campbell, whose powerful header gave England a deserved 1–0 lead. The assist marked Beckham’s first direct contribution of the tournament and highlighted the set-piece precision that had become one of his defining qualities.

Throughout the match, Beckham served as England’s creative focal point, helping dictate play from midfield while providing dangerous service into the attacking areas. Sweden responded after halftime, equalizing through Niclas Alexandersson in the 59th minute, and despite chances at both ends, the match finished in a hard-fought 1–1 draw.

While England would go on to produce one of the tournament’s defining moments with a victory over Argentina days later, the draw against Sweden represented the opening chapter of their World Cup campaign. For Beckham, wearing the captain’s armband on football’s biggest stage, it was another demonstration of the leadership, composure, and delivery that made him one of the most influential players of his generation.

“England v Sweden 2-6-2002” is stitched on the front of the jersey, with “50th Cap” embroidered on the lower hem. This shirt has been photomatched by SIA Photo Match.

Going Deeper - David Beckham

Few footballers have matched David Beckham’s combination of sporting achievement, global influence, and enduring cultural relevance. Over a professional career spanning more than two decades, Beckham established himself as one of the finest passers and set-piece specialists in football history, while also becoming one of the sport’s most recognizable ambassadors.

Beckham first rose to prominence as part of Manchester United’s celebrated “Class of ’92,” helping guide the club through one of the most successful periods in its history. During his time at Manchester United, he won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and the 1999 UEFA Champions League as part of the club’s historic Treble-winning season.

Following his success in England, Beckham enjoyed high-profile spells with Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain. Across his club career, he won league titles in four different countries, becoming one of the first English players to achieve such international success. On the international stage, Beckham earned 115 appearances for England, captaining his country for six years and representing England in three FIFA World Cups. His iconic stoppage-time free kick against Greece in 2001 secured England’s qualification for the 2002 World Cup and remains one of the defining moments of his career.

Beyond his accomplishments on the pitch, Beckham helped transform football into a truly global commercial phenomenon. His move to LA Galaxy in 2007 proved particularly influential, bringing unprecedented international attention to Major League Soccer and helping accelerate the growth of the sport in the United States. The so-called "Beckham Effect" extended far beyond ticket sales, elevating the league’s profile and paving the way for future generations of international stars.

Following his retirement in 2013, Beckham's influence only expanded. He became a successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, and sports executive, most notably as co-owner and president of Inter Miami CF.
