Despite arriving without several of their biggest stars, including the injured Kaká, Brazil showcased its attacking talent in an entertaining 3–2 victory before a crowd of more than 47,000 spectators.

Adriano was one of the most feared strikers of the 2000s, combining extraordinary power, pace, and finishing ability to earn the nickname "L'Imperatore" ("The Emperor"). After emerging with Brazilian club Clube de Regatas do Flamengo, he moved to Italy, where he enjoyed his greatest success with Inter Milan. At Inter, Adriano became one of the world's premier forwards, helping the club win multiple Serie A titles, domestic cups, and Supercoppa Italiana trophies. 

Internationally, Adriano was a key player for the Brazil national football team during one of the country's strongest eras. He won the 2004 Copa América, where he finished as joint top scorer and was named the tournament's best player, and helped Brazil capture the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup, finishing as the competition's top scorer.
