2026 World Baseball Classic

The 2026 World Baseball Classic was the sixth edition of the tournament, featuring 20 national teams competing from March 5 through March 17, 2026. Japan entered as the defending champion, having defeated the United States in the 2023 WBC final, and were widely considered the favorite to repeat. Much of that anticipation centered on Shohei Ohtani, who anchored the Japanese roster and delivered several standout performances throughout pool play. Japan went undefeated in the group stage, outscoring their opponents by a wide margin and serving notice that they intended to defend their title. They would ultimately fall to eventual champion Venezuela in the quarterfinals, the earliest exit in Japanese WBC history.

Venezuela claimed the championship for the first time, edging out the United States in the final on a go-ahead RBI double by Eugenio Suárez in the ninth inning. Maikel García was named tournament MVP.
