Description
FLOWN TO THE MOON ON APOLLO 11
P27 Update pages from the Apollo 11 CSM Updates, Part No. SKB32100080-330, S/N 1001.
3 6 x 8 inch sheets printed recto and verso, hole-punched and connected with a metal ring. The first sheet recto features notations in black ink in an UNKNOWN hand, likely an engineer on the ground prior to flight. SIGNED and INSCRIBED in BLUE INK: "USED ON THE LUNAR SURFACE ON APOLLO XI / BUZZ ALDRIN."
Together with a typed letter signed by BUZZ ALDRIN on his personal stationary certifying provenance, explaining the use of the sheets and that the inscription is in error.
Directly from the Personal Collection of Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin
A FLOWN PAGE OF FLIGHT DATA FOR APOLLO 11'S HISTORIC VOYAGE TO THE MOON.
The P-27 Updates pages from the Apollo 11 CSM Updates Manual. Buzz Aldrin's accompanying provenance letter reads, in full:
"Accompanying this letter are three sheets labeled P27 Update from the Apollo 11 CSM Updates, a manual flown in the Command Module Columbia to the Moon during the first lunar landing mission during July 16 to 24, 1969.
The CSM Updates sheets provided us with formatted data pages to manually enter initial values and changes in operations and location data relayed to us from the Mission Control Center (MCC) during the mission. The sheets that accompany this letter relate to the P27 update, a program used in flight operations. I have signed the first P27 update sheet, however while above my signature it says 'Used on the Lunar Surface,' this was noted in error. These pages were part of the CSM Updates manual flown in the Command Module Columbia, which stayed in lunar orbit, and did not descend to the lunar surface with Neil and I in the Lunar Module Eagle.
PURP was short for purpose of the data to be used, such as Trans-lunar Injection (TLI) Burn-out as inscribed here. V was for the command load Verb to be used, either 70, 71, 72, or 73. The GET was the time Ground Elapsed Time for the data recorded in hours, minutes, and seconds. The 30401 area was for the index number of command words in octal format and the grids 2 through 24 were correction word identifiers if needed.
The HR, MIN, SEC were the actual hour, minute, and second in mission elapsed time for the confirmation of a ground track verification. The LAT, LON, and ALT were the latitude, longitude, and altitude for this ground track confirmation. N34 was the noun procedure for the time of the event and N43 was the noun procedure for the latitude, longitude, and altitude.
This actual sheet was an excellent quick view reference for our crew during the historic flight to the Moon."
