This American pre-Code musical was directed by King Vidor and stars Daniel L. Haynes and Nina Mae McKinney. It follows a sharecropper’s troubled life and his relationship with a seductive woman. Filmed in Tennessee and Arkansas, it was one of the first major studio films with an all-black cast. It was also Vidor’s first sound film and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
