Film Posters of the 30s, Aurum Press Limited, 2003, p. 53
This is one of the most striking posters from the 1930s. It is also larger than the US three sheets, being 87 inches high as opposed to 81 inches. The artwork of Robert Donat clinging to the side of the train has amazing impact owing to its life-size format.
This is an exceptionally rare British poster. It is one of only five known surviving examples, all of which were found in Japan in the early 1990s. Apart from a style B British poster the same size, there are no other British posters for any of the Hitchcock film posters known to have survived for any of his films that he made in the UK before going to the US.
This classic Hitchcock thriller stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. The film is broadly based on the novel of the same name by John Buchan. The film is about a regular guy in London, Richard Hannay, who gets entangled in preventing an organisation of spies, called the 39 Steps, from stealing British military secrets.
