The Crucifixion
tempera on panel, gold ground, pointed top, in an engaged frame
47.2 x 26.8 cm.; 18⅝ x 10½ in.
Possibly Alfred Strölin (1871–1955), Paris and Lausanne (according to the 1956 sale catalogue, annotated 'Strölin');
Possibly by whose Executors sold, Lucerne, Galerie Fischer, 12–16 June 1956, lot 1462 (as North Italian school, late 14th century), to 'Meissner';
Anonymous sale, Milan, Finarte, 12 March 1963, lot 19 (as Bolognese School, 14th century);
Art market, Bergamo, circa 1976.
In the crowded composition and the physiognomies of the onlookers, this panel compares to a Crucifixion attributed by Federico Zeri to Jacopo di Paolo (c. 1345–c. 1430), a painter and miniaturist active in Bologna.1
