Property from a Family Collection

Pieter van Mol

Head Study of a Bearded Man

oil on paper laid on panel

panel: 12 ¾ by 9 in.; 32.4 by 22.9 cm

framed: 24 ¼ by 20 ⅜ in.; 61.6 by 51.7 cm

In the collection of the present family since circa 1950.

This deeply modelled Flemish Caravaggesque head study is a characteristic work from the brush of Pieter van Mol, a rare but highly skilled artist from the orbit of Jacob Jordaens and Pieter Paul Rubens in Antwerp. In it's intricatly detailed skin and careful attention to lifelike artifice, it compares well to the individual characters in van Mol's masterpiece, Diogenes with his lantern looking for an honest man, sold Sotheby's New York, 27 January 2022, lot 6.

We are grateful to Joost Vander Auwera for suggesting the attribution to Pieter van Mol, on the basis of photographs.
