A RARE AND BEGUILING WITNESSED FALL FROM AN UNCOMMON LOCALE

The villagers of Bogga Dingare, Nigeria witnessed Gujba as it hurtled across the sky on April 3rd, 1984. Once it fell to the ground and could be analyzed, scientists determined that it was one of the very few Bencubbinite meteorites in existence, and the only one seen as it was falling to the ground. As with the other 25 Bencubbinites known, Gujba is the result of a massive collision between a metallic asteroid and a stony asteroid, creating a superheated, metal-enriched gas that then condensed on the surface of the stony asteroid.

The intertwined metallic and stony chondrules found throughout this slice are the aesthetic result of what must have been an incredibly violent collision between these two very different heavenly bodies. Gujba also contains microscopic grains of interstratified graphite and diamond, an important discovery for geologists as incompletely transformed graphite has yet to be found naturally on Earth.
