Description
Camarasaurus Jaw With Teeth
Camarasaurus lentus
Late Jurassic (approx. 150 million years ago)
Morrison Formation, Moffat County, Colorado, USA
The right maxilla of a Camarasaurus (12½ x 9 x 2 inches, 31.8 x 22.9 x 5.1 cm), 13⅜ inches (34 cm) tall on custom metal stand. 8 pounds (3.62 kg).
The right maxilla is mostly complete preserving much of its exterior surface, including the premaxillary contact, lower border of the antorbital fenestra, and the post-dental process where it contacts the jugal. Numerous foramina and other surface details are visible. The lingual (inner) side is prepared to reveal the seldom seen dental intricacy of Camarasaurus. There are 18 partially or fully exposed tooth crowns within nine horizontal rows meticulously cleaned and kept in their original position in matrix. These in-situ teeth are in various degrees of eruption and development; hence, their enamel crowns are unworn and in pristine condition, allowing fine details including the distinctive wrinkle pattern to be appreciated. This specimen was preserved, cleaned, and prepared by an experienced and knowledgeable technician.
Excavated in 1996-1997 by Bob Witherell on private land in what is now known as Skull Creek Quarry, Moffat County, Colorado
