Description

Battle Mountain Meteorite — The First Witnessed Fall in Nevada

Chondrite – L6

Humboldt County, Nevada, USA (40° 40' 5"N, 117° 11' 21"W)

Witnessed Fall on August 22, 2012

105 x 83 x 63 mm (4⅛ x 3¼ x 2½ inches). 706 grams (1.56 lb).

This gorgeous meteorite - the first witnessed fall in Nevada - was also detected by weather radar on its crash landing to Earth. Because of this fact, many pieces were picked up shortly after its arrival, such that they remained completely fresh and without any weathering from lying on the Earth's surface for a significant amount of time.

This stone broke apart upon landing, giving it a stunning two-tone appearance, the light colored interior contrasting with the stark, black fusion crust that developed during the meteorite's descent to Earth.

A highly aesthetic chondrite, Battle Mountain has a low total known weight of just a few kilograms, making it quite desirable, with pieces of this meteorite found in the collections of the Field Museum, Arizona State University's Buseck Center for Meteorite Studies, and other premier institutional and private collections.
