Orr joined the multinational company Unilever in 1948 as a graduate trainee, following the completion of his law degree at Trinity College, Dublin.
In 1955, Orr was posted to India, where he served as marketing director for Hindustan Lever, later rising to vice-chairman of the Lever Brothers India in 1957. After decades at the company in various executive roles in London and New York, Orr was appointed chairman of Unilever from 1974 to 1982, overseeing the success of some of the most famous brands, including Persil, Jif, Dove, Vaseline, and Lipton. Even in retirement, Orr continued to enjoy a professional connection to South Asia as chairman of the British Council from 1985 to 1992 and the Charles Wallace Trust from 1991 to 1998.
