Thence by descent

Regina Hickmann (1938 - 2024) was a German art historian specialising in Indian art. She studied art history and Indology at the Humboldt University of Berlin, completing her thesis on K. K. Hebbar. She later worked at the State Museums in Berlin, where she curated exhibitions on Indian miniatures and Mughal paintings, and subsequently served as deputy director of the Museum für Indische Kunst until 2001. Hickmann acted as Hebbar’s interpreter during his stay in East Germany in 1967 in connection with an exhibition of his work at the International Exhibition Centre, Friedrichstrasse Station, Berlin, held in May and June 1967. The two developed a lasting friendship and remained in close contact through the 1990s.
